Sligo’s Fleadhfest finishes on a high

August 11, 2021

Fleadhfest – the first online Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann – has just concluded after 9 days of live concerts, sessions and competitions, which were streamed to audiences worldwide. The festival – the only traditional music festival taking place in Ireland this year – was watched by thousands of people every day and the response to the live music was both positive and widespread.

“It’s a credit to the people of Sligo, and to the Fleadhfest team,” said Labhrás Ó Murchú, Ard Stiúrthóir of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. “Every aspect of Fleadhfest was carried out in the most professional manner and it was an important new chapter for us to use the virtual world to bring our music to people in many different countries.”

Fleadhfest came about in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year the Fleadh Cheoil, a public event which usually draws tens of thousands of people for a musical street carnival, had to be cancelled due to fears about public safety as the pandemic took hold. This year, the Comhaltas and Fleadhfest teams met early in the year to plan a new virtual event, and Fleadhfest was the result.

The concerts with big names like Dervish, Téada, the Mairtin O’Connor Trio, Moxie and the Knocknashee Céilí Band were watched by tens of thousands of people in places as far afield as Australia, Canada, Argentina, the United States, Spain, Sweden, the UK and of course all around Ireland.

“We’re delighted with how everything went,” said Bartley Gavin, Chair of the local Fleadhfest Committee.

“To be able to give a platform to our music was our first priority. Our second was to give a profile to Sligo. We did this throughout the programmes, and I’m sure the tourism videos we included in each broadcast brought our county to new visitors who will come to Sligo in the future.”

Having also Chaired the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann events which took place in Sligo in 2014 and 2015, leading a group in event planning was nothing new for Bartley. But how did organising a virtual Fleadh differ from a traditional one, where the streets would have been thronged with people?

“It was certainly a challenge, but we had a fantastic group of people willing to put the shoulder to the wheel to make this happen. Under Anne Gorby’s direction, we had volunteers positioned everywhere we needed them, all trained to work in a Covid-safe environment, and it is a tribute to their work that the event went so smoothly.”

Fleadhfest encompassed many of the regular features of a Fleadh Cheoil, like concerts and sessions, as well as solo competitions in over 30 different categories. The main difference this time was that those events were streamed online, something which required a detailed programme of event planning to ensure that the viewer got the genuine Fleadh experience.

“We wanted to replicate as many of the things people usually see and hear at every Fleadh Cheoil,” said producer Micheál Ó Domhnaill, who headed up the broadcast team at Fleadhfest. “We were lucky to be able to call on a great technical team – drawn mainly from Sligo – to live stream the concerts. We also recorded some content for on-demand video, and by streaming to Facebook, this meant that even if you missed the live stream itself, you had the option of watching it back afterwards.”

And while many of the events – from the concerts on the gig rig to the Trad@Lunch sessions at the Hawk’s Well – were streamed online, the easing of restrictions also meant that up to 200 people also attended the concerts in person. Concert goers were brought by stewards into the arena and assigned their own pod, where they could sit, stand or dance, whatever their preference. And for many of those involved, musician and concert goer, this was a welcome return to some kind of normality.

“As a musician, it was such a relief to finally get back on stage,” said Cathy Jordan, lead singer with Dervish, who played their first live gig in 18 months at Fleadhfest. “The Peace Park is an incredible venue for live music, and it was such a pleasure to have real people in a real venue to perform to, rather than doing everything on Zoom.”

Oisín Mac Diarmada, who performed as part of the group Téada, was also a member of the organising committee, and he saw at first hand how important it was for people to get back on stage. “We have all felt a loss, not just financially, but in many other ways, by being unable to perform in the past year and a half,” he said. “From those who took part in the competitions, to the younger musicians who played support on the gig rig, to the headline acts themselves, this was a great opportunity. It really gives you a chance to appreciate what you’ve missed when you see the responses of those in the audience when you play on stage, there was such positive energy throughout the festival.”

The Fleadhfest programme was also supported by local businesses and agencies, including Sligo County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Sligo Leader and Comhaltas, and Fleadhfest Director of Finance Peter Farrell was quick to thank those who supported Fleadhfest.

“We had to fundraise in a really challenging climate, and to sell the concept of a virtual Fleadh Cheoil to businesses that might already have to face the own ongoing challenges because of the pandemic,” he said. “That we managed to reach our target is testament to the goodwill in our community and it definitely helped that we had a track record in running two of the biggest Fleadhanna Cheoil in recent years. We promised our sponsors a Fleadhfest to remember, and I’m delighted that we delivered on our promises.”

Fleadhfest can be watched back on the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Facebook page or on Fleadhfest.ie. Many of the concerts were broadcast on multiple platforms, including broadcast partner TG4, and – while the hope is that the Fleadh Cheoil will return to normality next year when it will be hosted in Mullingar – it’s likely that online programming will remain an important aspect of the Fleadh Cheoil into the future. And as for Sligo, the hope is that some time in the future – maybe nearer than we think – we could position ourselves in the box seat to once again host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. And that might be one of the great legacies left by Fleadhfest 2021.

Dervish Concert at Fleadhfest Rescheduled for Monday 9th August

August 8, 2021

After yesterday’s heavy rain and high winds forced the postponement of the Dervish gig at the Peace Park in Sligo, Fleadhfest organisers are delighted to confirm that the concert will take place tomorrow Monday at the usual 8pm time. The band will be supported by Ceoltóirí Tireragh.

“We are grateful to all for the flexibility shown after we had to postpone the concert due to the weather,” said Bartley Gavin, Chair of Fleadhfest. “It had threatened to become a real concern for public safety, and our main priority at all times is to run all of our events in a safe environment for participants and the public. The two groups, Dervish and Ceoltóirí Tireragh, as well as our technical and volunteer teams were more than willing to work with us to have the event rescheduled,” he added, saying that he’d also like to thank the Hawk’s Well Theatre for their help in contacting customers via their online system.

Doors open for the final concert at Fleadhfest at 7pm tomorrow evening. Ceoltóirí Tireragh will be followed by Dervish for the grand finale of the first ever online Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which Sligo was delighted to host this year.

Musical Traditions Meet – appreciating cultural connections across and in between

August 5, 2021

This year’s Virtual Fleadh Cheoil hosts a mini ‘Traditions Meet’ programme celebrating the Ulster Scots musical tradition alongside traditional Irish music. The programme connects musicians from different cultural traditions and brings together Northern Irish musicians and Sligo musicians. The ‘Traditions Meet’ programme is a cross-border musical programme supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 which in acknowledging the historical juncture of the decade of centenaries, seeks to encompass the two main traditions and deepen an appreciation for the musical traditions of Ulster Scots and traditional Irish music on the island of Ireland, as well as and the connections in between.

This small initiative is made up of two events – a lunch time sessions with ‘The Two Rev’s!’ and a Thursday evening ‘Traditions Meet’ Ensemble involving eleven musicians and dancers from Sligo and Northern Ireland. The Two Rev’s!presents two fine traditional Irish musicians Seamus Quinn (fiddle) and Gary Hastings (flute) in what these days is a very rare meeting. Since becoming college buddies forty years ago, the two men, now Reverends in two different denominations, continue to share a passion for Irish music, language and the church. The Two Rev’s will bring their respective cultural influences to bear in their music and chatter, and with piano accompaniment by the talented award winning Sligo dancer and musician Samantha Harvey the session is guaranteed to  stir heart, soul and feet! Traditions Meet Ensemble is a concert event in two energetic parts which will re-sound might and magic from the coming together over the course of the evening of the lambeg, bodhrán, djembe drums, fiddle, flute, banjo, accordian, pianao, bouzuki, Uileann pipes, whistles and guitar.   The concert opens with an informal showcasing of Ulster Scots and Irish musical traditions and musical collaboration of a group of seven musicians, and dancers, led by a well-known Northern Irish and Ulster Scots musician, composer, storyteller and presenter Willie Drennan  with Sligo musician Kerrie Herrity Lenehanand will conclude with 4 northern musicians making up Different Drums of Ireland performing both traditional and original songs which celebrate their collective cultural influences.

Bartley Gavin, Chair of the Sligo Fleadh Cheoil Executive Committee said: “We are delighted to work with Sligo County Council and Ruth Gonsalves Moore from The Glens Centre IFI programme at The Glens Centre in County Leitrim to bring this important dimension into the virtual Fleadh Cheoil programme this year. It provides a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate connectivity between cultural traditions and across the island, through music and song”. The two events are designed to increase knowledge of differing traditions and connect people through their love of music.

Attendance in person is ticketed (bookable at https://www.hawkswell.com/events) and both events will be live streamed www.FleadhFest.ie/live

Frontline Covid-19 Workers Guests of Fleadhfest 2021

August 4, 2021

Pauline Kent of Sligo University Hospital with Bartley Gavin of Fleadhfest

As a small gesture of support, Fleadhfest were delighted to offer tickets to frontline workers to the Knocknashee Céilí Band concert on the opening night of the festival.

20 frontline healthcare workers were able to take the night off to attend the gig at the Peace Park. These heroes and heroines, who have been battling the Covid-19 pandemic during the past 18 months, had the opportunity to attend a safe outdoor concert, the first of its kind to have taken place in Sligo this year.

All of our attendees were placed into pods, ensuring that they were within their own bubble, and at any time when they moved around the arena, masks were worn to ensure that public safety measures were adhered to at all times.

Bartley Gavin, Chair of Fleadhfest, thanked the volunteers and those who attended the events in any capacity, saying that “It was our aim from the start to bring live traditional I rish music back on to the stage, but we could only do so in a safe environment. Having worked so hard and taken all of the health advice available in recent weeks, we are delighted with how the events have gone so far. We look forward to a safe, healthy and enjoyable remainder of the weeek at Fleadhfest,”

Fleadhfest in Full Swing

August 4, 2021

With concerts from Dervish, Mairtín O’Connor, Moxie and a special Traditions Meet performance still ahead this week, there’s plenty to look forward to at Fleadhfest 2021 in Sligo.

Téada at the Peace Park during Fleadhfest 2021

We have already had two spectacular nights of music with the Knocknashee Céilí Band and Téada, which played to appreciative audiences both within the Peace Park venue as well as thousands more who watched in online.

There were viewers in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Australia and in many more countries, not to mention the many more who watched in closer to home.

People have been so starved of live music, this has really been a positive for people, especially for the lucky ones who managed to grab one of the golden tickets. And with 4 live shows still ahead, it’s not too late to grab a ticket if you are in the Sligo area in the coming days. Traditions Meet will see musicians from different backgrounds come together for a special cross-border musical programme tomorrow night (Thursday at 8pm). Tickets for this event cost just €3.

Limited numbers of tickets – priced at just €20 – are available for all of these gigs, but move quickly if you want to come along.

And if you are worried about being at an event during these challenging times, please be reassured that we have taken every step to ensure that you can the events are fully Covid-compliant. And if you take a look at the comments section of our Facebook page, you’ll see just what an enjoyable experience it has been for many thus far, whether there in person or watching in online.
